  • 5 Things Students Can Learn from Jeremy Lin

5 Things Students Can Learn from Jeremy Lin

Jeremy Lin has worked hard to achieve his status as a cultural icon and famous NBA basketball player. He faced some challenges in his life that could have kept him from pursuing his dreams, but he persevered and was able to reach levels of success and accomplishment that not even he thought was possible.

And even though Lin is a basketball player with physical skills that not everyone can replicate, that doesn’t mean his success was a given. He has other admirable traits that led him to where he is today. Others can learn from these traits and apply them to their own lives as well. Let’s take a look at a few things students can learn from Jeremy Lin to help them stay focused, motivated, and reach for success.

1. It Can Take Awhile to Reach Success

One thing that Jeremy Lin would surely tell you as a student, is that it can take a while to reach your version of success. You never know where life is going to take you and everyone has their own individual paths that lead them toward the future. The path to success is full of ups and downs but as long as you keep moving forward, you’ll be able to reach closer to your desired results every day.

Lin was not expected to be the superstar that he ended up being and he didn’t reach that status early in his career. It took a lot of effort and focus to eventually see success. As a student, the end result of all your hard work might be immediately apparent, or it might not be for a while, but just remember that you will eventually get there.

2. Don’t Give Up on Your Dreams

Jeremy Lin never gave up on his dreams and neither should you. Even if you are facing setbacks or obstacles along the way, the big picture can help you stay focused and dedicated when times are hard. Lin wasn’t drafted out of high school to play basketball and nobody expected him to ever reach the NBA. But he didn’t give up and eventually, he reached his goal.

No matter what your dream might be, you can inch your way closer to it every day. But a key part of this is to never give up. You will never get there if you don’t try. So always follow your dreams if you want to see them come true someday. This is simple advice, but it’s true and important.

3. Education is Important

Even though Jeremy Lin became a professional basketball player, his education always came first. Instead of going to a college where he was sure to play basketball, he chose to go to Harvard where he could get an amazing education that would benefit him if his basketball dreams didn’t pan out.

By seeing the bigger picture and committing yourself to education, you can open up opportunities in the future that can create a better life for you and your loved ones. Even if you don’t end up directly using a degree or course you took, knowledge is priceless and will help you become a better person.

4. Work Hard and Good Things Will Happen

Things aren’t always going to go your way. The road of life is filled with many hurdles that can feel like major setbacks at the time when in reality, they will allow you to pursue new endeavors. Jeremy Lin did not get accepted to his first choice of colleges but instead of seeing that as a big issue, he worked hard with the opportunities that came his way, and that eventually led to some pretty amazing things down the road.

A key to dealing with difficult times is to work hard throughout it all. It’s easier said than done but if you can keep plugging along every day, good things are going to happen. This goes alongside the never give up on your dreams advice mentioned above but requires even more focus and dedication. A very important lesson in life is to continue to work hard even when things are tough, it’s a lesson Jeremy Lin learned and is quality advice for any student.

5. Be a Good Person and Remain Humble

Everyone is going to have a different experience in life. Some people will become rich and famous. Some people will live a more modest and normal life. But that doesn’t mean that there is any real difference between the two. Jeremy Lin has always been a good person and even though he has tasted fame, he still treats people with respect and is a humble person.

If you are doing good in school, don’t let that get to your head and make you feel like you are better than any other student. Always try to help out and encourage others who may not have the same abilities as you do. And even if you are smart or popular or whatever, don’t let that change you as a person. Be nice to everyone and always offer your support when you can.

Jeremy Lin has become a role model for many people across the world because he lives true to the tips mentioned above. While following this advice won’t guarantee that you reach the same status as Lin, it will help you be a good person and a good student, no matter where life ends up taking you.
