John-Michael Scapin’s Biography

Canadian Tenor, John-Michael, has been praised for his “clarion, perfectly pitched voice” and the “fantastic deftness” of his acting skills (cbc.ca). The recipient of the Sir Edmund Walker Dorothy Isabella Webb Trust Scholarship and the Helen Heim Nichols Scholarship, John-Michael will continue his studies in the fall of 2017 at Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music.

His principal teachers are W. Stephen Smith and Jean MacPhail. He has also pursued private study in Italy with Tenor, GianFranco Cecchèle.

In 2018, John-Michael will makes his Northwestern Opera debut in Handel’s Theodora in a new production by Joachim Schamberger.

During the 2017 season, John-Michael appeared in Against The Grain Theatre’s production of Puccini’s La Bohème and in the fall of 2016, made his role debut as Le Conte Barigoule in Pauline Viardot’s Cendrillon under the direction of Joel Ivany.

His select credits include: MacBeth, The Winter’s Tale, Much Ado About Nothing, Cloud 9, Eurydice, Roanoke (NYU), Scenes from the Bathhouse, Moll (TIFT), A History of Summer (Summerworks), Romeo & Juliet (ATA) , The Land of Smiles (TOT), The Magic Flute, Der Freischütz, Alcina, Abduction from the Seraglio, Lucio Silla (Opera Atelier), El Gato con Botas, The Cunning Little Vixen, La Belle Hélène, Alcina (GGS Opera).

John-Michael was the inaugural season winner of CBC’s Triple Sensation, a program dedicated to discovering young Canadian triple threats. After a nation wide search, John-Michael was awarded the Chapters & Indigo Scholarship for the Arts to attend the theatrical training institution of his choice. With this award, he trained at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts where he refined his skills as an actor at The Atlantic Acting School and The Classical Studio.

He has appeared in Master Classes with Marlena Malas, Russell Braun, Adrianne Pieczonka, Larry Moss, Joe Flaherty, Michael Kahn, Patsy Rodenburg, Rebecca Caine, Graham Johnson, Isabel Bayrakdarian, Inga Kalna, Michael MacMahon and Sanford Sylvan.

Additional training programs include: Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute, SongFest, Vancouver International Song Institute, The Vianden Festival, The School of Atelier Ballet and The Second City.

A recent graduate of The Royal Conservatory of Music’s Glenn Gould School, where he was the recipient of The Ihnatowycz Emerging Artist Scholarship, John-Michael has been awarded additional bursaries from The Arts Song Foundation of Canada, York Region’s Celebration of The Arts, ORMTA, NATS and the Alliance for Canadian New Music Projects.

Mr. Scapin was born in Montréal, Quebec and resides in Evanston, Illinois.
